The History and Sacred Significance of Vietnamese Physicians’ Day

Seventy-one years ago, on February 27, 1955, President Ho Chi Minh sent a historic letter to the Health Staff Conference. Despite its brevity of just 368 words, this concise and accessible message, published in the People’s Newspaper, conveyed profound philosophies and three core pieces of advice for health care workers:

  1. Emphasize Honest Unity .
  2. Show Compassion to Patients (“A doctor should be as caring as a mother”).
  3. Contribute to Building National Medicine .

On February 6, 1985, the Council of Ministers officially designated February 27 each year as Vietnamese Physicians’ Day. This date serves as an important opportunity for society to express deep respect and gratitude to our “white-coated soldiers,” while also reminding those in the medical field to continually enhance their responsibilities and virtues in the mission of building and protecting our homeland.
